Onaga ha sido un fuerte opositor de los planes para mover Futenma, que se encuentra en una zona densamente poblada de la isla, desde su elección en 2014 . Bloqueó los planes de trasladar Futenma a un área más remota, ya que quiere que la base sea retirada de la isla.
Se espera que visite Tokio el jueves y su oficina presentó una queja formal y solicitó a las fuerzas estadounidenses detener las operaciones de vuelo hasta que se determine la causa del accidente del martes.
